Earlier this year, we invited 15 artists to connect with our herd. The results? Beautiful, authentic artwork that capture the heart and soul of our 15 horses, celebrating the impact that they have on all those who encounter them.

Our well-loved annual event returns this 5 - 8 December, and the EQUAL herd can't wait to meet all of you again!

This International Volunteer Managers Day (5 Nov), we're spotlighting Mellisa, EQUAL's amazing Volunteer Manager! She is incredibly passionate about rallying support for EQUAL's cause, and continuously seeks to create meaningful experiences for individual and corporate volunteers alike. Thanks to Mellisa’s passion and support, our volunteers don’t just help others—they also grow, gain confidence, and make a lasting difference in the community.

Mellisa also recently spearheaded a Volunteer Management Capability Development (VMCD) project for EQUAL, supported by @ncss.sg, which was voted the Most Impactful Project Award 💚

When he first came to EQUAL, 15-year-old M was ful

When he first came to EQUAL, 15-year-old M was full of energy but struggled with connecting with others. He was deeply uncomfortable with showing any signs of vulnerability, and often acted overly confident, especially around horses.

In his initial encounters with Good Bet (also known as GB)—one of EQUAL’s retired racehorse-turned-therapy horse—M tried to project a bigger, bolder version of himself. However, horses like GB can sense when someone is faking confidence. GB didn’t react but remained calm, patiently waiting for M to settle. It was as if GB understood M’s inner struggles.

Through many rounds of walking and riding exercises, M began to connect with GB. At first, M struggled to stay focused and in the present moment, but GB's gentle, non-judgmental presence slowly encouraged M to be more honest with himself. GB taught him the importance of patience—both with himself and others.

Over the course of the 8-session programme, M’s transformation was evident. Slowly, he started to explore sharing his feelings. He learned that vulnerability wasn’t a weakness and that his friends wouldn’t judge him for being honest. Each session, M set a personal goal: to speak more politely and be kind. Remarkably, he consistently met those goals.

By the end of the programme, M had become the youth that demonstrated the biggest change. He formed connections with his peers, gaining their respect not by being the funniest or the loudest, but by showing his true self. Through his bond with GB, M learned that confidence comes from within, and patience is the key to growth.

At EQUAL, animal welfare is at the heart of what we do. That’s why we’re always exploring ways to improve how we engage with our incredible equine partners.

On 6 October, our team had the eye-opening opportunity to learn about Positive Reinforcement Training from the experts at Mandai Wildlife Group! 🙌 We learned how this approach is centred on respect, and encourages the voluntary cooperation of animals for their daily care, from husbandry to veterinary procedures.

From Moe the capybara to Thiago the sea lion and especially with the Pygmy goats at KidzWorld’s Animal Land, the team had an absolute blast observing and learning together 🐐🐾

A huge thank you to our Animal Welfare Committee Chairperson @belindawidgery and Gail Laule, VP of Animal Behaviour & Programmes at Mandai Wildlife Reserves and her amazing team for this unforgettable experience! 🧡

As Singapore’s racing chapter came to a close on

As Singapore’s racing chapter came to a close on 5 October 2024, we reflect on the many horses who found a new purpose at EQUAL, like our retired racehorses Galaxy and Good Bet. These thoroughbreds found a second career with the EQUAL herd post-retirement, and are now at the heart of our equine-assisted programmes, helping those in need.

Prior to the final race, we had the honor of welcoming Muzi Yeni— who went on to be the winning jockey — to EQUAL’s stable. He learned about our work with retired and rescued horses, and connected with our equine trainers, who are also former jockeys who’ve found new, meaningful careers serving alongside the horses.

Our ability to continue these efforts, bringing equine-assisted support, learning and healing to those in need, depends on the resources we have. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received—and with your help, we can do even more.

How do our horses help our young clients learn to show and receive affection, and in turn, feel a sense of belonging?

In a heartwarming story of connection and trust, a 12-year-old boy named J discovered an extraordinary friendship with a miniature horse named Ginger.

When J first joined EQUAL’s Horse-ibilites programme, he was struggling with social interactions and having a tough time with friends at school.

Yet, Ginger, known for her reserved and discerning demeanour, surprised everyone with her gentle approach towards J. Recognising his kind nature, she formed an immediate bond with J, approaching him with unexpected gentleness and warmth. J’s Programme Instructors view this special connection as a reflection of his genuine character. They see it too, in his enthusiasm and willingness to help– from helping to clean up to offering to carry heavy items.

For J, Ginger is more than just a horse; she is a friend who helped him that showing and receiving affection can be safe. His fondest memories -- “petting you Ginger, helping you Ginger, and taking care of you Ginger” -- beautifully capture this.

This touching connection highlights the profound impact that a caring animal can have on a young person’s life, offering support and affection in ways words sometimes cannot. This remarkable friendship reminds us of the incredible bonds that can form between humans and animals, providing comfort and understanding when it’s needed most.

EQUAL presented the inaugural edition of EQUAsian Forum this 22 April 2024, bringing together thought leaders, equine-assisted service professionals and players in the social service sector to encourage connections, conversations and collective growth for this growing field.

Themed “Building a Herd at Home - Connecting Equine-Assisted Services in Singapore and Beyond”, the forum featured sharing sessions by @equal.sg, Equine Experiential Education Association (E3A) (USA), @livingstoncounselling, @rdasingapore and @theris_stcrc , as well as breakout discussions amongst local and regional forum attendees to exchange ideas and perspectives.

From best practices for facilitating equine programmes to how we’re innovating our services to support evolving needs, the forum provided much food-for-thought and insights for us to apply and explore.

Deepest gratitude to our speakers and attendees of this first-ever EQUAsian Forum! We look forward to more conversations and collaborations, so that we may continue to advocate for the transformative potential and impact of equine-assisted learning, development and healing ❤️🤝🐴

EQUAL partnered Equine Experiential Education Association (E3A) to bring the E3A Level 1 Certified Practitioner Course to Singapore and Asia for the very first time, which took place 16 - 20 April on EQUAL’s premises.

Our team had the incredible opportunity to undergo world-class mentorship and training by E3A Master Trainers on equine-assisted programme facilitation. The experience has helped to refine our facilitation techniques, deepened our connection to each other, and expanded our understanding of the profound horse-human connection.

We look forward to serving our beneficiaries better with these invaluable tools, insights and expertise gathered over the past 5 days ❤️🐴

Today @equal.sg was at @rotarysingapore & @singapore_aquatics’ Swimarathon 2024, a fundraiser where @josephschooling, members of the National Swimming Team, Rotarians and friends were making a splash for a good cause!

So lovely to have been able to share about our work - including the learning platform/ Metaverse developed by Rotary Club and StarHub - with swimmers, donors, families and friends who were there to support and fundraise for Singapore Aquatics, Industrial and Services Co-operative Society Limited (ISCOS) and the communities they serve.
